“‘What Saves Us’: Poetry, Poets, and War”
Presented by the Division of Humanities
A poetry presentation and analysis featuring
Dr. David McNaron, Division of Humanities
In this talk, poet and philosopher David McNaron will explore poems written about war, and the public and sometimes controversial role that poetry and poets have played responding to 9/11 and the Iraq War. First Lady Laura Bush cancelled a poetry event at the White House when invited poets made it known that they would read poems critical of the war. These poets went on to form the Poets against the War movement; the resulting website and book are reminiscent of the work done by Poets against the Vietnam War in the 1960’s. These protest poems pose a problem: what happens when poets’ social conscience, which cries out for protest, clashes with their responsibilities to the craft of poetry? More importantly, what does poetry have to tell us about war?
