Student Newsletter - May 1, 2007

From the Dean,

As the 2006–2007 academic year enters its final stretch, I am struck by all that the college’s students and faculty members have accomplished over the past year. The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences is distinct in that our students and faculty possess diverse interests and skills, extending from the physical and social sciences to the humanities. The range of co-curricular events and academic research emerging from the college reflects our vast interdisciplinary foundation.

Throughout the year, we have explored the academic theme of “Identity,” hosting distinguished speakers such as former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks. Our divisions engaged students with panel discussions, debates, lectures, and performances, which analyzed who we are and what shapes our personal identities from different perspectives. Together we have used our academic studies to look inward.

On May 12 in the BankAtlantic Center, an estimated 1200 undergraduate students have been invited to graduate from Nova Southeastern University. The Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony is an important culmination of students’ studies at Nova Southeastern University. I hope that all graduating seniors will attend the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony so that I can personally congratulate each of you. Additionally, a Baccalaureate Reception will be held on May 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Center. The reception will be a celebration of graduates’ accomplishments, as well as an opportunity for students socialize with professors and introduce their families to NSU.

I am pleased to announce the following honorees, who have been selected for their contribution to the college:

2007–2008 2006 Full-Time Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award:
Kate Waites, Ph.D. (Division of Humanities).

Yana Borshcher (Division of Math, Science, and Technology)
Deirdre Foisy (Division of Math, Science, and Technology)
Marianela Arteaga (Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences)
Maureen Friel Green (Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences)

Sincerely,

Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences

Do you know someone interested in NSU? Tell them to come to the Campus Visit Day. The best way to get a feel for a college is to see and experience it in person.
