Student Newsletter - August 2, 2007

From the Dean,

In just over two weeks, fall semester classes will begin, marking the start to an exciting academic year. I, along with faculty members and administrative staff, look forward to welcoming new and returning students to the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.

Our primary mission is to support your academic goals and providing experiences that enable you to be successful in your future professional endeavors.  To be most effective, the ideas and concepts presented in the classroom and in textbooks must be considered and reflected upon in broader contexts.  Our faculty members strive to make these ideas real and applied.

Toward this goal, each year the college organizes co-curricular experiences and programs within a context of an annual academic theme. The theme has relevance across all disciplines and invites deeper consideration of classroom matters.  The theme for the 2007–2008 year will be “Truth and Power.” It is my expectation that, through this theme and related activities, you will reflect on your responsibility to examine various dimensions and diversity of truth and the related duties and obligations of power.  What does this mean in your classroom, in your professional preparation, and in your community?

Throughout the coming year, we will explore these questions together. I look forward to hearing your input and views on what “Truth and Power” mean in your life and in your studies.

Sincerely,

Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences
