Welcome to the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and the start of the
2007–2008 academic year. As you begin classes, I hope that you find that
your education at NSU touches all aspects of your life: supporting professional
goals, personal exploration, improving communication and time management skills,
and challenging you to find balance among divergent responsibilities and
relationships.
Throughout the year, these student newsletters will present notice of
upcoming events and opportunities offered by the College. In addition, you
will be reminded of key deadlines for registration and enrollment
obligations. It is our intent that you will draw more from your academic
experience by involvement in and engagement with these programs.
As you start your classes this fall, please take a moment to focus on your
role – and responsibility – with class discussions. Exchanging ideas with your
professors and classmates makes your learning more active. When you formulate
and express your own thoughts, you strengthen many critical skills:
comprehension, analysis, organization, critical thinking, and retention of
information. Discussion often requires you to be open to different points of
view – which is a valuable tool for the future. Students who participate in
class tend to be more successful.
As always, I encourage you to speak with your professors – early and often –
taking advantage of office hours. Assistance from your academic advisor
and tutoring can resolve many questions and concerns before they become
problems!
