Student Newsletter - September 15, 2007
From the Dean,
Each year, I am pleased and honored to meet with many Farquhar College of
Arts and Sciences students: at Convocation, in Undergraduate Honors Program
events and seminars, and at various settings across campus and in the community.
Despite differences in programs of study and personal and professional goals,
something special binds you together. Our students share a curiosity about
the world: you seek a deeper understanding of those issues that concern
you. As a result, you are well rounded, versatile scholars, have a
penchant for creative work and research, and become committed and engaged
professionals. Faculty in the College see this as well—and are committed
to your success that much more.
The college encourages academic inquisitiveness by providing you with the
opportunity to learn from experts in a variety of disciplines through the
General Education Program. The goals of General Education include attention to
foundational skills (effective writing, speaking, and computation), expanded
breadth of knowledge (in domains such as biological and physical science,
humanities, and social sciences), and dynamic competencies (critical thinking,
synthesis, analysis) that will serve you in your professional and personal lives
well beyond graduation. As such, you will be able to speak intelligently
and with confidence on diverse topics, from the political and environmental
aspects of global warming to the psychological and legal aspects of human
rights. All who graduate from the college share this common foundation of core
educational values.
Seek a broad—and challenging—selection of general education classes
throughout your academic career. Strive to enhance critical thinking and
problem solving skills. Your faculty—and your academic adviser— can be valuable
guides in selection and scheduling of these courses. Please remember the
30-credits required for General Education must follow a specific
distribution. If you have any questions about your curriculum plan, please
contact your academic advisor.
Sincerely,
Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences
