From the Dean,

Early next month, we are honored to welcome Erin Brockovich as part of the college's Distinguished Speaker Series. As a file clerk, Brockovich provided the drive to launch the biggest direct action lawsuit of its kind, resulting in the largest legal settlement in U.S. history. She exemplifies that one person can make a difference by probing for truth and using one’s power to expose it.

In line with the college’s annual theme of “Truth and Power,” I encourage you to explore and consider issues of ‘truth’ and ‘falsehood’ and the responsibilities of power in your own life and studies. Consider what difference your actions could make. What are your obligations to act - as a responsible citizen, as a student?

In the coming months, you will have many opportunities both in class and through outside activities to discuss this theme. Through these conversations, I hope you gain a deeper appreciation for the importance – and complexity – of how the relationship between truth and power affects how we live our lives.

Sincerely,

Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences
