Dean's Corner
From the Dean, Each spring, Nova Southeastern University conducts the undergraduate commencement ceremony recognizing the achievements of students and the contributions of faculty, families, and the community. The 2008 NSU Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony will be held on May 10 at 4:00 p.m. in the BankAtlantic Center. During commencement, several outstanding graduating students are recognized for academic achievement and service to the community. I would like to congratulate the following students in the college who have been selected as Outstanding Undergraduate Students: Kristina Christoph, a biology major; Samantha Domingo, a psychology major; Ryan Frabizio, an English/history major; Laxmi Lalwani, a psychology major; Cynthia Martinez-Babulik, an English major; and Nicholas Rocco, a biology major. NSU also presents the James Farquhar Award to recognize all-around achievement in scholarship, service, and leadership. This year the recipient of the prestigious James Farquhar Award is K. Elizabeth Bond, a biology major. I would additionally like to congratulate all of the students who participated in the Undergraduate Student Symposium on April 4. There was an impressive turnout for the event, and our students did an excellent job in presenting creative and high-quality scholarship. The winners of the 2008 Undergraduate Student Symposium ‘Best in Show’ are Laxmi Lalwani and Samantha Domingo from the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Best wishes to all students for a successful completion of the winter semester. Sincerely, Don Rosenblum, Ph.D. Distinguished Speakers Series April 14 Panel Discussion on Student Activism The Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences will host a discussion entitled "Who are you calling apathetic? Student Activism at NSU and Beyond." Student activists will tackle issues from voting to campus and community activist groups to political engagement, discussing the "how to's" of activism, as well as the question, "Why should we care?" April 17 Distinguished Speakers Series: Kerry Kennedy The Division of Humanities in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host an evening with Kerry Kennedy, a leading advocate for human rights around the world, from 7:00–8:30 p.m. in the Miniaci Performing Arts Center. Kennedy will lecture on “Speak Truth to Power,” as part of the college’s Distinguished Speakers Series. More Important Dates to Remember
Now Available Online Upcoming Events April 15 MathExpo2008: Panel Discussion on Mathematical Power in Voting As an event commemorating Mathematics Awareness Month, the Division of Math, Science, and Technology will host MathExpo2008, a panel discussion on mathematical power in voting. The discussion will analyze “What Makes Your Vote Matter? Let Mathematics and Statistics Show You.” The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Knight Auditorium of the Carl DeSantis Building. More April 15 Math Brain Bowl The Division of Math, Science, and Technology will host a scholastic competition called the Math Brain Bowl in room 1124 of the Carl DeSantis Building. The contest will feature four teams comprised of four students each. The teams will face off by answering questions on the history of mathematics, algebra, calculus, logic, and applied mathematics. More April 24 Faculty Lecture Series on Truth and Politics The Faculty Lecture Series will present two talks concerning truth and politics from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in room 240 of the Parker Building. Stephen R. Levitt, LL.M., associate professor in the Division of Humanities, will lecture on “The White Rose: The Courage to Challenge Evil.” Alex Cuc, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, will lecture on “How to Tell the Truth About the Past: Lessons from Eastern Europe.” More April 24-27 NSU Theatre: Directors' Festival of One-Acts The final theatre offering of the year will be a festival of student-directed works. Performances will held at the Black Box Theatre, located in the Performing and Visual Arts Wing of the University Center, on April 24-26 at 7:00 p.m. and April 27 at 2:00 p.m. More May 1 An Introduction to the Cadaver Experience Mark Jaffe, D.P.M., assistant professor in the Division of Math, Science, and Technology, will sponsor a guest lecture by Ernest F. Talarico, Jr., Ph.D., from the Indiana University School of Medicine–Northwest (IUN). Talarico will discuss IUN’s Human Cadaver Prosection Program and the Intercampus Undergraduate Student Externship Program, sponsored by NSU, IUN, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Talarico will speak from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in room 123 of the Parker Building. May 9 Twelfth Annual Baccalaureate Reception The Baccalaureate Reception will be held for graduating students, family, and friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the University Center Arena. The reception provides an opportunity for the NSU administration, faculty, and staff to recognize the accomplishments of our graduates. More May 10 2008 NSU Undergraduate Commencement Exercises Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson will address an audience of more than 5,000 students, family members, and friends at the Commencement ceremony, which will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the BankAtlantic Center. Wilson served as acting ambassador to Iraq during Operation Desert Shield, as well as ambassador to the Gabonese Republic and to the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. He is known for his timely and astute insights on international policy, particularly toward Iraq and the Middle East. More
Scholarship Opportunities April 18 Apply for the Summer Internship Program at Marketing Agency Royall & Company Royall & Company, a top marketing agency dedicated to undergraduate student recruitment and enrollment, is now accepting applications for its second annual summer internship program. Internship positions are available in Accounting/Finance, Art Direction/Graphic Design, Copywriting, Corporate Curator, Strategic Analysis and Reporting, Survey Research and Analysis, and Web Design. Deadline is April 18, 2008. More May 1 Apply for the National Human Cadaver Prosection Program The Indiana School of Medicine-Northwest is now accepting applications for its National Human Cadaver Prosection Program, which will be offered on July 30-31. Selected students will prepare cadavers for medical education and research. All applications must be received no later than May 1. More May 23 HACU Scholarships For the 2008-2009 academic year, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) will award over 200 scholarships worth over $350,000 to help students from HACU member institutions continue their studies. To see specific criteria for the various scholarships and begin the application process, please visit the HACU Web site. Deadline is May 23, 2008. June 14 HACU Internships Students are invited to apply for a summer or fall 2008 internship through the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities’ (HACU) National Internship Program (HNIP). The application deadline for one of these paid internships, with federal agencies or private corporations nationwide, is June 14 for fall placement. More
Travel Study Opportunities Summer Travel Study in Dublin, Ireland With Ireland as your classroom, students can earn up to six credits toward your degree during the Summer 2008 semester. Excursions to cultural and historical sites will be an integral component of the academic program. Volunteer Opportunities Boomers and Beyond Health Expo Volunteers for the Boomers and Beyond Health Expo at HPD are needed for Sunday, March 30. In two shifts, volunteers will run the registration desk, food and beverage service, provide guidance and directions, and assist at the booths as needed. The volunteers will receive recognition from HPD, a t-shirt, lunch, and the opportunity to interact with most of the students and clinicians of HPD disciplines either before or after their shift. Interested students can sign up with Mark Jaffe, D.P.M., assistant professor in the Division of Math, Science, and Technology, outside of room 314 of the Parker Building. More |
