Financial Aid

The Five-Minutes FAFSA: An instructional video for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Financial aid is a major source of assistance for many students attending college. NSU requires all students to submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application gives the school information necessary to determine the types of aid for which each student qualifies.

Financial aid is offered through the federal and state governments, as well as private sources. There are two main types of aid: self-help aid through loans that the borrower needs to repay, and gift aid, which includes grants and scholarships that do not need to be paid back.

Students should apply for financial aid as early as possible to ensure enough time for all required forms to be submitted, reviewed, and processed.

The following sections provide links to Web sites that help NSU students apply for financial aid. We highly recommend that all students familiarize themselves with this information.

Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

The financial aid term that seems most confusing to students and their families is Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is the numerical value assigned to students after they complete the FAFSA. This number is not a direct dollar-for-dollar contribution expected from students and their families, but rather a rating to determine the student's financial need. The need value helps the school verify what types of aid the student qualifies for. It varies according to which university the student attends, as well as which programs the student pursues.
