Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Schoalrships and Grants
Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences institutional awards are managed by the Office of the Dean. See specific award
descriptions for eligibility and renewal requirements. These awards are normally discontinued when a student has earned
130 credits in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences or leaves the college to attend another NSU program. Students
may petition for scholarship continuation on a semester-by-semester basis to meet requirements for their primary degree
program. Petitions must be submitted in writing to the Office of the Dean. Students who have previously earned bachelor's
degrees at NSU are not eligible for institutional awards if they choose to seek a second bachelor’s degree at

About the Stolzenberg-Doan Family
James Doan, a professor of humanities in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, established this award in
honor of his grandparents, Helen and Joe Stolzenberg, and his mother, Marilyn J. Doan, for their commitment to the
study of the history, languages, and cultures of other nations. Helen was born in Ely, Minnesota, of Finnish parents,
and Joe, fluent in German and Bulgarian, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. Marilyn,
proud of her German and Finnish ancestry, encouraged Doan to pursue his lifelong interests in foreign cultures,
particularly their languages, folklore, and mythologies. The award named in their honor provides financial assistance
to students at Nova Southeastern University to study abroad in summer courses taught or sponsored by Farquhar College
of Arts and Sciences faculty.

About Judith Shulimson
Judith Shulimson earned her Ph.D.
in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986. Her doctoral research was based on her work with
the Eskimo Heritage Program in Nome, which is dedicated to preserving Alaskan indigenous cultural traditions. She

About Linda Gordon

Routeburn Track, New Zealand
Linda A. Gordon earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She
taught literature and composition in the Humanities Division of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, 1990-2004.
A specialist in modernism, she presented and published essays on the art and literature of the period. Her interests
were wide ranging, however, and took her far beyond her original pursuits—literally and figuratively.
She was at the vanguard of integrating technology into the classroom, offering both instruction and encouragement
to her colleagues and students. Outside of academia, she devoted herself to a variety of artistic, environmental
and social causes. She volunteered for a range of organizations, from the Bonnet House to Habitat for Humanity,
and adopted Raggs, a rescued greyhound. She nurtured a passion for travel and, in her inimitable fashion, embarked
on a solitary journey around the world in 1996, keeping a journal of her adventures. An avid outdoorswoman,
a proponent of the arts, a champion of social causes, Linda A. Gordon was an educator in the truest sense of
the word.
