HARNESS YOUR INNER ENTREPRENEUR

If you have ever envisioned yourself giving a sales pitch to the business moguls on Shark Tank or dreamed of being your own boss, then the Razor’s Edge Shark Cage Scholars Program at NSU Florida is made for you. This program immerses first-year college students in the world of entrepreneurship and continues to assist these students on their entrepreneurial journeys. As a scholar, you will

  • identify business opportunities
  • present Shark Pitches and Shark Funding Pitches for a business idea
  • network with business professionals and entrepreneurs
  • mentor younger students in the Shark Cage Scholars Program or the Huizenga Academy
  • participate in quarterly service projects at NSU or throughout the community
  • start, run, and serve as CEO for an on-campus business that engages the NSU community

Shark Cage students are actively involved in leadership initiatives in the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, the Huizenga Business Innovation Academy, and throughout campus. Many Shark Cage students serve, or have served, as members of President’s 64, an elite body of 64 hand-selected student leaders. Upon completion of the program, you will be armed with the tools to start your own business, purchase a franchise, launch a new product, and perhaps even receive an investment from NSU toward your own start-up.

Please note: Future students should apply to the Huizenga Business Innovation Academy (HBIA). The Razor’s Edge Shark Cage Scholars Program will be shuttered in May 2022 after successfully launching and operating 50 student-run, campus-based businesses that each operated for one year from August 2018 through April 2022. The HBIA program offers additional benefits to future students, such as an accelerated path to an M.B.A., a scholarship, and more.

YEAR ONE: Discover

In your first year, you will dive headfirst into the world of entrepreneurship. You will have the opportunity to pitch an on-campus business idea to Huizenga Business College faculty, NSU administrators, and fellow Shark Cage students for evaluation and recommendations. They will also begin developing a case study chronicling their journeys to campus-based business ownership.

YEAR TWO: Build

In year two, you will continue fine-tuning your business idea and present a Shark Funding Pitch to gain start-up financing, including financial analysis for the viability of the business, through a microloan from NSU to start your business in year three. Furthermore, you will meet with various NSU departments to understand logistical, legal, and other issues related to getting your business ready to launch and even prepare an exit strategy.

Campus Involvement

In addition to all the responsibilities established in year one, Shark Cage Scholars will serve as mentors to younger Shark Cage and HBIA students and continue working on developing their business ideas.

YEAR TWO: EXPAND

If the first two years are building your entrepreneurial foundation, year three is all about framing out your future business success. As you launch your business, manage your on-campus business strategy, and eventually shutter your business at the end of the year, your coursework will focus on specific disciplines and industries. The goal is to help discover where your passions lie and begin to chart your career path or entrepreneurial journey.
