But often, constraints, financial barriers, or lack of access can get in the way of career growth. We’ll support initiatives that advance your career.
At NSU, you can strengthen your professional skills by:

Recruit a Shark Week
This is your chance to network with 100+ employers looking to recruit students for jobs, internships, volunteer positions, and research opportunities. Each day of Recruit a Shark Week will feature industry-specific career fairs. Whether you’re looking for an internship with a government agency or a research position in the environmental sciences, you’ll be able to pin down a specific date and time tailored to your goals.

Interested in learning about career opportunities? Want to learn how to stand out in a sea of applicants? Sign up for information sessions that give you a deep dive into different companies, their cultures, and what they’re looking for in future team members.
Case Competitions
Show off your problem-solving skills with a little healthy competition. Come together with your fellow Sharks as part of a team to solve a case in front of a judging panel comprising senior-level executives and NSU faculty. Using teamwork, critical thinking, and analytical and organizational skills, you’ll solve real-world professional problems. In the past, teams have been tasked with creating a bipartisan immigration policy for a political campaign and developing a health communication toolkit for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Case competitions are a chance to network with future employers, earn ExEL credits, and gain hands-on experience. There are even prizes.
Past prizes have included:
- Offers for internships or full-time positions
- A three-day cruise
- A $1,000 scholarship
- Gift cards
Workshops
Amp up your skills with customized, on-demand workshops. NSU’s Center for Academic and Professional Success is dedicated to organizing career and professional development opportunities to help you dominate.
Choose workshops such as:
- The art of career and major exploration
- Developing an effective resume and CV
- Developing an effective cover letter
- Developing networking strategies and professionalism
- Developing pre-health purpose
- Enhancing your research skills
- Marketing your online portfolio

Professional Development Fund
Professional development opportunities give you the skills and confidence to thrive in internships and other career-building opportunities.
Details
NSU established the Professional Development Fund to help Sharks gain experience outside the classroom. If you scored an internship or want to attend a career fair at a professional conference, we can help you finance it.
The fund provides:
- Up to $1,500 in awards for internships
- Up to $500 in awards for professional conferences
Eligibility
To be considered for an award through the Professional Development Fund, you must do the following:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and be in good academic and judicial standing.
- Work at your internship for more than 120 hours, or attend a professional conference that has a career fair or a hiring component.
- Complete at least two semesters of classes at NSU.
- Students who apply for an award must not have previously received an award from the professional development fund.
- A completed application and budget sheet
- An Internship - Professional Development Fund - Application + Budget Sheet – Internship
- A Conference - Professional Development Fund - Application + Budget Sheet – Conference
- A link to a 60-second video on Portfolium or YouTube, which includes who you are (name and major), how your career path will benefit from this grant, and what experience you hope to gain from this opportunity
- An offer letter (if applying for funding for an internship)
- A conference agenda (if attending a conference)
- A reference letter from a faculty member
- A copy of unofficial transcripts
- An updated résumé
Once the internship or conference is over, you will be required to attend a recognition event. You may be asked to speak about the experience to faculty, administrators, and colleagues.
The Center for Academic and Professional Success will notify you if you’ve been selected to receive funding.
- Internships at companies run by immediate family are not eligible for funding.
- Fee-based placement programs are not eligible for funding.
